GCSE Applied Business

Exam Board: OCR Qualification Level: 1 GCSE

What will I be doing?

The GCSE in Applied Business consists of an examined unit – Business in Action (40%) and a controlled assessment – Making your Mark in Business (60%).

The controlled assessment evaluates how a local business might become even more successful in the future. Students will evaluate how a local bakery meets the needs of their customers. The controlled assessment will also include primary and secondary research to find out the views of the local community.  Students will create a new product range for the business and make recommendations on how the business could improve in the future.

The examined unit allows students to understand why businesses operate and all of the factors that influence how businesses operate.

Exam topics include:

  • Types of Business ownership.
  • Primary, secondary and tertiary businesses.
  • The main reasons why people set up their own business
  • Departments that exist within a business.
  • Business Aims and Objectives
  • Stakeholders
  • Changing world of ICT and Technology

BTEC Level 2 First Award in Business

Exam Board: Edexcel

Qualification Level: Equivalent to 1 GCSE

What will I be doing?

The BTEC Level 2 consists of 4 units.  The aim of the course is to introduce students to the world of business and the different aspects that affect and influence how different businesses operate.

What will I learn?

Students will study a range of units that includes exploring business purposes to looking at business situations that have a real vocational context.  Work will be based around real businesses and students would benefit from investigating the different businesses that exist in their local area.

The examined unit allows students to develop understanding of the financial impacts on businesses.

Units:

Unit 1 – Enterprise in the Business World (Coursework)

Unit 2 – Finance for Business (Exam)

Unit 3- Promoting a Brand (Coursework)

Unit 8 – Recruitment, Selection and Employment (Coursework)

How will I be assessed?

The course is 75% coursework and 25% external exam.
